Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and Chairman of Oilserv Emeka Okwuosa stated that Nigeria needed to tap the $76 billion market for nanotechnology to accelerate national industrial development.
Nanotechnology, a technology that allows the manipulation of matter at a nanoscale, has a market worth of almost $76 billion in 2020.
Minister noted that this development could dramatically unlock the nation’s environment, energy, and agriculture as well as offer needed solutions for the country’s health problems.
“Remarkable progress is being made around the world for the application of this knowledge in different fields to improve the quality of human life.” Onu said that we are trying to use this technology to accelerate our national industrial development.
Okwuosa pointed out that nanotechnology could be an alternative technology to modern technology in solving immediate social problems.
Okwuosa stated that the organisation was at the forefront of investments in Nigeria’s technology through a University of Nigeria centre. The company will continue to support the Nanotechnology Research Group. He believes that this collaboration and support will create the desired value for Nigeria and Africa.
He stated that research and development in nanotechnology will play a major role in putting Nigeria’s scientific and technological achievements on the international map.
Okwuosa said that technology can make energy more cost-efficient, safe and secure. He also stated that it has the potential to increase energy efficiency across all industries and economically exploit renewable energy production using new technological solutions and optimized production technologies.
The Chairman stated that the application of technology to the agricultural sector would allow for increased food production and protection from pests, given the rapidly growing global population.
He stated that this is crucial, especially considering the projected rise in world population to more than 9 billion by 2037 (next 16 years), which will cause serious problems if food production does not improve.
Okwuosa stated that the initiative will improve crop productivity if it is properly implemented. He stressed that nanomaterials could be used in targeted crop genetic engineering, smart monitoring of plant responses to environmental conditions with nanosensors and would also increase crop productivity by using Nanopesticides and Nanofertilizers.
Okwuosa stressed the need to apply nanotechnology in the environment and the health sector. However, Okwuosa also lamented the slow pace of application and the many challenges.
He said that in developing countries such as Nigeria, resources to support front-line science have been a dream because of the high cost of intellectual property rights.
He suggested that the funding requirements for research be addressed and that national governments should arrange education and training programmes at the local and regional levels to help people become aware of this new field of technology.
